Troubleshooting

DaVinci Resolve guides for Windows installs and performance

Numbered fixes for problems editors report most: huge downloads, SmartScreen warnings, GPU playback, and Free vs Studio choices.

Install the Windows ZIP cleanly

  1. Confirm you have roughly 3.45 GB free for the ZIP plus additional space for extraction and the installed app.
  2. Download the build listed on the download page.
  3. Run Get-FileHash and match SHA256 6be1442368aa90e07126c86fc5b6467071a4df01072a585b637da5fc70e18d37.
  4. Extract the ZIP fully before launching the installer. Do not run setups from inside a partial archive view.
  5. Finish the installer, then reboot if Windows prompts for driver or Desktop Video components.

SmartScreen or antivirus warnings

  1. Note the exact warning text (SmartScreen “unrecognized app” is the common case).
  2. Re-check the SHA256 digest. If it differs, delete the file and download again.
  3. Scan the installer with a second engine if your workplace requires dual confirmation.
  4. If the hash matches, use SmartScreen’s more-info path to continue, or unblock per your IT policy.
  5. Read the longer policy on trust and security.

Playback stutters or GPU errors

  1. Confirm Windows 10 Creators Update or Windows 11, 16 GB RAM (32 GB for Fusion), and a GPU with at least 4 GB VRAM.
  2. Install NVIDIA Studio driver 581.57 or newer when using NVIDIA cards on the Resolve 21 line.
  3. In Preferences, verify the correct GPU is selected and that OpenCL or CUDA is available.
  4. Lower timeline resolution or enable proxies for heavy RAW or high-frame-rate media.
  5. Close other GPU apps. Free Windows Resolve uses a single GPU; a second card will not help without Studio.

Proxy workflow for 4K

  1. Generate optimized media or proxies from the Media or Edit page for camera originals that stutter.
  2. Edit against proxies, then switch to camera originals before final color and deliver.
  3. Keep proxy storage on a fast local drive separate from archive disks when possible.
  4. For deliverable masters, confirm Render settings on the Deliver page match the client format.

Studio AI audio tools

  1. Confirm whether Voice Isolation, Music Remixer, or Dialogue Leveler appear in the Inspector.
  2. If controls are missing or watermarked, you are on the free license for those Neural Engine features.
  3. Upgrade to Studio only if those tools are required for the job; Fairlight editing itself remains available in free.
  4. See FAQ: Free vs Studio for resolution and GPU differences.

Choosing Free vs Studio

  1. Stay on Free if Ultra HD 60 fps ceilings and single-GPU Windows performance cover your delivery specs.
  2. Choose Studio for Neural Engine tools, multi-GPU, higher frame rates, and advanced Resolve FX such as temporal noise reduction.
  3. Budget $295 as a lifetime Studio license, not a subscription.
  4. Re-read feature limits on the features page before purchasing.

Best practices

  • Keep project libraries on reliable storage; enable backups before major version upgrades.
  • Match color management (DaVinci Wide Gamut / Intermediate) early on multi-camera shows.
  • Document GPU driver versions when collaborating so every machine stays in the supported range.
